Omg, I was a US Senate page too! 1989-1990. From the sounds of your story not much changed in between us. A few names exchanged but many still the same. Being a page was by far my biggest life altering experience. Not all for the positive but the freedom! You can’t make it up.

I was one of George Mitchell’s pages. We lived in a Dirksen House office building. One floor was set aside for girls and another for boys and house and Senate pages were combined. There were 2 RAs on every floor. It was too easy to get away with anything. lol. School in the attic of the Library of Congress 6:15-8:15AM. Four 20 minute classes. Needless to say we didn’t learn much there. Had to be at work in the Democratic cloakroom by 8:30 AM. Half the time we didn’t even have school because Senate went out of session too late. But honestly, the best part was the free rein access to anywhere in the capital building. We used to sneak up into the private rooms in the rotunda upstairs. Might as well have been sex lairs. The experience definitely shaped my views of adults and people of “respect”. Did you have a favorite spot to chill? I was always trying to escape.

Can’t wait for March Sadhana!

wow so interesting, there were no residences when I was there, we were totally free in the world, no supervision. I lived at Thompson Markward Hall I think it was on NE 2nd. Was Patrick still head of the Dem cloakroom? I never stayed on the floor tbh I loved to roam, I would always take the longer trips, as far as I could go, all my friends were house pages so I would go hang over there as much as I could

So I was waiting to respond till I was able to get in touch with my fellow pager Sam for confirmation. Indeed Patrick was still there but not head honcho anymore. I'm pretty sure he had dementia but they kept him around to make him feel important. Bob Bean was the head of the cloakroom. He may have been a page around the time you were there. Sam also confirmed for me they ended the House page program the year after us because one of our colleagues had an affair with a Senator. I won't mention any names. Lol. I roamed and roamed those halls for hours. I smoked at the time and got a kick out of the fact I could smoke anywhere indoors. I also lost my innocence to a Gallery doorman from New Mexico who was 27 at the time. Let's just say my parents weren't impressed when I came home at Thanksgiving break with an engagement ring (yes, I was 16 and beyond naive with a too wild streak to match). Nevertheless they sent me back for more. Crazy crazy times.
